The Chicken & the Egg

Emily Barnett

There’s a lot happening at the Boys & Girls Club of Rosebud - but if you ask our youth, one of the most exciting parts of the day might just be checking on the chickens.

Operation Laying Hen is going strong, and tending to our chickens has become part of the rhythm of the Club.

Each day, our Club members help care for the flock, complete their chores and collect eggs. Everyone has a role to play. They’re learning the daily responsibilities that come with caring for animals, while also getting a front-row seat to something as simple - and remarkable - as where food comes from.

The eggs they collect are then used in Club meals and snacks, shared with Club members and their families, and shared with other community members. It’s a full-circle moment. Instead of seeing eggs as something that simply appears in a grocery store carton, our youth can connect the dots between animals, care, food and community.

The flock gives our youth another reason to slow down, pay attention and get outside. In a world that often pulls young people toward screens and constant stimulation, caring for an animal asks something different: be present, be patient and take care of what is in front of you.
